Janus’s Story

In ancient Rome, Janus was the god of new beginnings and transitions, of gates, doors, endings and time. He is depicted as a two-faced god since he looks both to the future and the past. The month of January has its name from Janus.

This special piece of beech tree wood was discovered in Baba’s Valley, in the Bucegi Mountains, on a warm October day. The valley is one of the wildest parts of the mountain chain, because of its difficult access and rich vegetation. I remember how amazed I was by all the trees torn apart by avalanches and piled up at the bottom of the valley.

The Crafting Process

This piece of wood was not cut from a living tree. It was found dry, on the ground.

It needed cleaning, washing, brushing and sanding. It was also treated against harmful insects, pests and mold.
