Skulda is the most feared of the Norns, in Norse mythology. Colored by Greek mythology, we see her as the one who cuts the thread of our lives, but her job is much more complex then simply “cutting the final thread”. She governs obligations, and is the one who not only cuts, but also marks the thread or wood for changes and conclusions. As she watches not only for time of death, she also is involved in marking other significant points, such as giving birth, changing careers, meeting and losing lovers. We fear her because she is the one who reads the patterns and dictates the changes that must occur, and as a rule, we don’t like dramatic change.

This willow tree wood was found in the Danube Delta, on the shores of an old and unused water channel. The channel is an old belt of the Danube, built in the 80′ and served as part of a grandiose communist plan of modernizing the delta. Furtunately it never came to an end. The access on the channel was possible only by small boat on rows, without the use of an engine, because of the multitude of trees and branches fallen in the water. One time I had to actually step outside the boat and pull the boat over a floating tree. I had to row for 5 km of complex waters, but it was well worth it due to the beauty of the place, which can hardly be put into words.
This piece was part of a larger wood which gave birth to another 2 lamps, sisters of this one, Urd and Verdandi.

This piece was not cut from a living tree. It was part of on old and dry root.

This wood needed cutting, washing and sanding.

It was also treated against harmful insects, pests and mold.
