Bake-Kujira’s Story

A Bake-Kujira (化鯨, literally “ghost whale”) is a mythical yōkai (ghost) from Western Japan. It is said to be a large skeleton whale accompanied by strange birds and fish. In one story a fisherman tries to catch it with his harpoon but ends up sailing right through it.

This piece of birch tree root was found in a forest close to Ivănețu Mount, which is part of Buzău Mountains. To me that is a very special forest, with wild animals and local stories which add a strong flavor to the landscape. There I found a large tree torn down by the storm with a tiny piece of root that has now made this lamp.

The Crafting Process

This piece of wood was not cut from a living tree. It was found dry, on the ground.

It needed cleaning, washing, brushing and sanding. It was also treated against harmful insects, pests and mold.
