Malinalli’s Story

Malinalxochitl (from Nahuatl malinalli “grass” and xochitl “flower”) was the sister of the god Huitzilopochtli, the founder of Mexico. While her brother ruled their people from the heavens, appearing to priests in dreams, Malinalxochitl guided them in person. She was beautiful and mild-mannered, but also a powerful witch.

This beech tree branch was found in a forest in the Baiului Mountains on an early winter day. The forest was full of animal tracks and I chose one to follow. It took me to a stream where a huge beech tree was waiting, like an old general surveying his forest troops. I found this dry branch at its base.

The Crafting Process

This piece of wood was not cut from a living tree. It was found dry, on the ground.

It needed cleaning, washing, brushing and sanding. It was also treated against harmful insects, pests and mold.
