Čhápa’s Story

In Lakota mythology, Čhápa (often misspelled as Capa) is the beaver spirit and lord of domesticity, labor and preparation. The Lakota are a Native American tribe who believed that everything has a spirit.

I found this piece of spruce tree wood on the lower parts of the Baba Valley, on the east part of the Bucegi Mountains. It was an early winter day with a chill breeze. I remember the sound that the wind was making, blowing through some dry leaves, like a long tremor.

The Crafting Process

This piece of wood was not cut from a living tree. It was found dry, on the ground.

It needed cleaning, washing, brushing and sanding. It was also treated against harmful insects, pests and mold.
