STORY

Varaha was an incarnations of Vishnu, as described in Mahabharata, in old Hindu belief. Sweta Varaha Avatar is Elasmotherium, which is ancestor of present day’s Rhinoceros, who was believed to have raised the submerged Earth from the bottom of the ocean, on his head. Varaha emerged as a tiny beast (a size of a thumb) from the nostrils of Brahma, but soon started to grow. Varaha’s size increases to that of an elephant and then to that of an enormous mountain.

This piece of wood was shown to me while traversing a secondary ridge on Baiu Mountains. It was not far from a big dried and iconic beech tree, called by some mountaineers the elephant. This fragment was part of a large fir tree trunk, partly reintegrated into nature, mostly covered by moss and fungus and it was home to many beetles and ants. I managed to salvage this part without turning their world upside down. The whole time I spent there it was a woodpecker nearby, probably working it’s way to a snack, and giving a very spacey feeling through that rhythmic and echoing knock.

CRAFTING PROCESS

This fragment was not cut from a living tree. It was found attached to an old tree trunk already fallen.

This piece of wood needed peeling, cleaning, washing, brushing and sanding.

It was also treated against harmful insects, pests and mold.
