STORY

Jengu are water spirits in mythology of the Sawa, an ethnic group in Cameroon. The Sawa believed these spirits could act as an intermediate between the living and the spiritual world. Jengu were also thought to cure disease, and played an important role in some tribal rites, for example when a child entered adulthood. In West, Central and Southern Africa some other tribes believe in the Mami Wata, a water spirit thought to resemble the Jengu.

This piece of willow tree wood was found on the deserted and lonely seashore between the village Sfantu Gheorghe and the town Sulina, in the Danube Delta. It was a summer evening, just before the fierce mosquitoes made their appearance. Everything was still and it seemed like the sea almost forgot to push the land away with it’s tireless waves.
