STORY

In Norse mythology Hringhorni was the funeral ship of Baldr, the greatest of all ships, launched by Hyrrokkin, a giantess. She went to the ship and with a single push set it afloat, but the motion was so violent that the fire sparkled from the rollers, and the earth shook all around, much to the annoyance of Thor. Baldr’s body was then borne to the funeral pyre on board the ship.

This piece of beech tree wood was found in Piatra Craiului, at a shepherd’s hut. It was salvaged from a larger piece, set to be firewood. For sure if I hadn’t pass around that place on that beautiful autumn day it would have been used for making fire. The shepherd leaves with his animals for the duration of the cold season, and he returns in the spring.
