Amaterasu, or Amaterasu-omikami, is the goddess of the sun, the universe and the High Celestial Plain from which all kami descend. She is a major kami and a central figure in Shinto. According to legend, the Emperors of Japan are descended from Amaterasu, and this was once used as justification for their reign. Amaterasu is the daughter of Izanami and Izanagi, born from her father Izanagi’s left eye.

This piece of willow tree was found on the deserted and lonely sea shore between the village Sfantu Gheorghe and the town Sulina, in the Danube Delta. It was a summer evening, just before the fierce mosquitoes made their appearance. Everything was still and it seamed like the sea almost forgot to push the land away with its tireless waves.

This fragment was not cut from a living tree. It was found castaway on the beach.

This piece of wood needed cleaning, washing, brushing and sanding.

It was also treated against harmful insects, pests and mold.
